Voronin Welcomes Yushchenko Plan For Transdniester


18 July 2005 -- Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin today welcomed a Ukrainian plan to settle the 13-year-old conflict between Moldova and its breakaway Transdniester region.

The plan was put forward by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko earlier this year.

Voronin, speaking before Moldova's parliament, said.

"I want to welcome the initiative launched by Mr Viktor Yushchenko, the president of Ukraine, regarding a political solution to the [Transdniester] conflict and the return of the eastern region of our country within the frame of normal, democratic development of Moldova," Voronin said.

Voronin was speaking during a visit to Moldova by Terry Davis, the secretary-general of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) .
