Russia Charges Alleged Militant

25 July 2005 -- Russian prosecutors have filed murder and terrorism charges against a suspected Chechen militant accused of participating in a 1999 attack against Russian soldiers.

The Supreme Court in Russia's republic of Daghestan, which borders Chechnya, is due to consider the charges against the man and later set a date for hearings.

Prosecutors say the man took part in a 1999 attack in Daghestan in which five Russian soldiers were beheaded and a sixth shot dead.

Russian security forces detained the man earlier this year in Ingushetia, which also borders Chechnya. Prosecutors say he was found with illegal weapons and a videotape of the beheadings.
