Latvia Rejects Russian Extradition Request

22 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The Latvian government has refused Moscow's request to detain and extradite exiled tycoon Boris Berezovskii to Russia.

Latvian Interior Minister Eriks Jekabsons says Berezovskii arrived in Latvia on 21 September on a business trip.

Interior Ministry spokesman Krists Leiskalns said Moscow should ask Britain to detain and extradite Berezovskii. Berezovskii lives in Britain, which has granted him political asylum.

Berezovskii is a well-known critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and is wanted in Russia for alleged large-scale fraud.
