Del Ponte Due In Belgrade

Carla del Ponte (file photo) 29 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- UN war crimes chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte is due in Belgrade today to push authorities for more cooperation with capturing war crimes fugitives wanted by the UN tribunal in The Hague.

Del Ponte has repeatedly called for officials in Serbia and Montenegro to arrest and hand over Ratko Mladic, who is sought on genocide charges in connection with the massacre of some 8,000 Muslim boys and men in Srebrenica in 1995, and for keeping Bosnia's capital Sarajevo under siege during the 1992-95 war.

Authorities in Belgrade have maintained they have been unable to locate Mladic.

On 28 September, Serbia and Montenegro's Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic told the Associated Press that Serbia and Montenegro could face isolation unless it hands over Mladic to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia by 20 November -- the 10th anniversary of the Dayton peace accords that ended the Bosnian war.
