Ukrainians Celebrate Anniversary Of Orange Revolution

A scene from last year's Orange Revolution (AFP) 22 November 2005 -- Ukrainians are celebrating today the first anniversary of their country's Orange Revolution.

Last November, mass protests against election fraud that became known as the Orange Revolution helped bring down the old regime and led to the election of President Viktor Yushchenko.

Several thousand people waving orange flags gathered today at Kyiv's Independence Square -- the epicenter of last year's demonstrations.

Top Urkainian musicians were performing for the crowd ahead of a nationally televised speech that was to be delivered by Yushchenko:

Yushchenko pledged yesterday to overcome disappointment among some Ukrainians that the revolution has not lived up to its promise.
