Former Governor Shot Dead In Western Ukraine


(RFE/RL) Lviv, Ukraine; 29 November 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Reports from western Ukraine today say unidentified gunmen shot dead former Lviv Oblast Governor Stepan Senchuk.

Police say Senchuk was found dead, lying near his car in a village near Lviv.

Senchuk headed the Lviv regional administration from 1999 through 2001. Earlier this year, he joined the Our Ukraine People's Union, President Viktor Yushchenko's power base.

RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reported that Senchuk had close ties with Petro Oliynyk, the current governor of the Lviv region.
