Indian Hostage Found Beheaded In Afghanistan

(RFE/RL) April 30, 2006 -- Police in Afghanistan say the decapitated body of an Indian hostage was found in the southern Zabul Province today.

Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran condemned the killing: "The government of India is appalled by this dastardly and inhuman act of terror on the part of Taliban and its sponsors which has resulted in the tragic and untimely death of an innocent Indian citizen, who, like many of our compatriots, had been making a contribution to Afghanistan's reconstruction with dedication and diligence."

A purported Taliban spokesman, Qari Mohammad Yusof, said the hostage was killed as he tried to escape.

On April 29, Yusof said the hostage would be executed if all Indians working in Afghanistan didn't leave within 24 hours.

The Indian, a mobile-phone engineer, and his Afghan driver were abducted while driving on April 28 on the Kandahar-Kabul highway.
