EU Decision On Bulgaria, Romania Expected

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso (file photo) (epa) May 9, 2006 -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso today said that the European Union will next week decide whether Bulgaria and Romania should join the EU as planned, in January 2007.

Barroso said the decision will be made on May 16.

Barroso's remarks come amid speculation that one or both countries face delays in their scheduled accession, as they struggle to meet the EU's demands for reforms.
