Gunman Attacks Turkish Judges

(RFE/RL) May 17, 2006 -- A gunman today stormed a session of Turkey's highest court and opened fire, injuring five judges, one of whom later died from his wounds.

The gunman was detained after the attack in Ankara.

The motive for the attack is not clear. The gunman reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar!" (God is Great!) as he fired his pistol.

The attack is believed to be linked to the court's rulings confirming a ban on Muslim headscarves in public institutions and schools.
