Putin Sacks Nenets Governor


July 21, 2006 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has sacked the governor of the far-northern Nenets Autonomous Okrug.


Aleksei Barinov becomes the second serving governor Putin has sacked since new rules in late 2004 abolished direct elections for regional governors and gave the president the right to remove them from office.


Barinov has been suspended since May when he was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement. He denies any wrongdoing.
