Russian Ambassador To Kenya Mugged

(RFE/RL) August 21, 2006 -- Russia has called on the Kenyan authorities to increase security for its diplomats after its ambassador was mugged on August 20.

Valery Yegoshkin was returning to the capital, Nairobi, when the car in which he was traveling was stopped.

Two assailants wielding machetes attacked and robbed him.

The ambassador is being treated in a Nairobi hospital for a back wound. His condition, which was initially described as "serious," is now stable and his life is not in danger.
