Uzbek Authorities Warn Belgian NGO

(RFE/RL) September 12, 2006 -- Uzbekistan's Justice Ministry today ordered a Belgian nongovernmental organization to comply with national legislation within 30 days, or face closure.

The pro-government information website press-uz.info quotes a Justice Ministry official as saying the Uzbek authorities suspect the Damien Fondation Belgium of tax evasion.

The NGO specializes in combating tuberculosis and leprosy.


The foundation has been working in Uzbekistan since 2004.
