In a statement, Ban described Migiro as a highly respected leader and outstanding manager who has championed the developing world.

Ban said he intended to delegate much of the management and administration of the UN secretariat to her as well as socioeconomic and development issues.

The UN statement noted that Migiro is just the third UN deputy secretary-general -- and second woman -- in history. She replaces Mark Malloch Brown.
