Kazakhstan Seizes Dozens Of Cars With Contraband From Uzbekistan


(RFE/RL) May 17, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Kazakhstan says it has foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of consumer goods from Uzbekistan, according to RFE/RL's Kazakh Service.


The National Security Committee says border guards seized 73 cars with Uzbek state license plates and loaded with contraband consumer goods in South Kazakhstan Region.


As the convoy did not comply with a demand to stop, the servicemen fired nearly 30 shots into the air.


The drivers managed to escape to Uzbekistan's territory.
