U.S. Senator Dismisses Russian 'Cold-War Thinking'

May 30, 2007 -- U.S. Senator Trent Lott (Republican, Mississippi) has dismissed as "relics of Cold War thinking" Russia's opposition to U.S. plans to deploy parts of a missile-defense shield in Central Europe.

Lott said he will try to convince Russian lawmakers that the shield poses not threat to Russia.

Lott arrived in Moscow today as part of a delegation of U.S. senators for two days of talks with Russian counterparts.

Talks are expected to focus on strategic and economic issues, including Russia's entry into the World Trade Organization.
