Daughter Of Former Kyrgyz President Charged

Bermet Akaeva (file photo) (ITAR-TASS) August 6, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyz authorities have formally charged the daughter of former President Askar Akaev with obstructing justice and contempt of court, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reported.

Bermet Akaeva is accused of pressuring a regional court to make it overturn an April decision to bar her from running in a by-election for parliament.

Akaeva told RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service today that the charges were politically motivated. She said she could be sentenced to up to two years in prison if convicted.

Akaeva added that two of her supporters are also facing jail terms of up to 10 years.
