Rice Urges Europe To Back Kosovo Independence

September 25, 2007 -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is calling on European Union countries to join the United States in supporting statehood for Serbia's province of Kosovo.

In an interview with Reuters news agency, Rice says that only independence for Kosovo can potentially bring stability to the Balkans.

Serbian and Kosovar ethnic Albanian representatives are due to start direct talks on September 28 in New York in a bid to resolve their stalemate over the future of the province.

The talks will be mediated by the United States, Russia, and the European Union.
