Erevan, March 14 (RFE/RL) - U.S. Deputy
Secretary of State Strobe Talbott met for two hours today in Erevan
with Armenia's President Levon Ter-Petrosyan. An rfe/rl correspondent
in Erevan reports talbott emphasized that all sides could benefit
from a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Talbott noted that economic development could follow a return to genuine stability in the region. Reports have cited heightened U.S. interest in the region, especially as American companies become involved in exporting oil from Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan maintains an embargo on land-locked Armenia, and the U.S. has tried to influence Turkey to allow more goods to reach Armenia via Turkey.
Talbott also held talks in Baku, and travels on to Turkey.
