Moscow, March 21 (RFE/RL) - NATO Secretary General Javier
Solana said in Moscow today that Russia remains firm in its
opposition to NATO's planned expansion into Eastern Europe.
Solana made the comment after talks with President Boris Yeltsin and Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov.
But solana said nato's expansion would go ahead as planned.
Yeltsin has said that the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance's plans to give membership to former Warsaw Pact States would create a new Cold War.
Solana met earlier with Gennady Seleznov, the Communist Party speaker of the lower house of parliament. Yesterday he met Defense Minister Pavel Grachev, who acknowledged that they had "different approaches" to the question of NATO's future eastward expansion.
