Warsaw, June 20 (RFERL) - Polish police today closed down two Romanian shanty towns in Warsaw. Over 120 persons were apprehended and the makeshift lodgings were destroyed.
The shanty towns were inhabited by Romanian migrants, most of them Romanies, who came to Poland illegally. Polish officials say that many illegal migrants intend to use Poland as a transit country on the way to the West.
The apprehended migrants were put in temporary quarters, where they will be held until the completion of deportation proceedings.
Poland has signed agreements with neighboring countries to facilitate deportation of illegal migrants.
