Tajikistan: President May Meet In Moscow With Opposition Leader

Moscow, 23 August 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Preparations continue for a meeting in Moscow of Tajikistan's President Imomoli Rakhmonov and the leader of the Tajik opposition, Said Abdullo Nuri.

Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksei Bolshakov held talks on the meeting yesterday in Moscow with Tajikistan's Prime Minister Yakhye Azimov. Talks on the Tajikistan conflict also have been held in Moscow this week between Tajik Foreign Minister Talbak Nazarov and Russia's First Deputy Foreign Minister Boris Pastukhov.

A ceasefire agreed at talks between the government and opposition in Ashgabat last month has not been honored. Continued fighting is reported in the Tavil Dara area, an opposition stronghold, east of Dushanbe.

The United Nations special envoy on the conflict, German diplomat Gerd Merrem, has said a monitoring force was never able to reach the scene of the fighting to file report.
