Uzbekistan: Governors Face Dismissal For Poor Agricultural Performance

Tashkent, 29 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Uzbekistan's President, Islam Karimov, in a speech in Jizzakh has blamed negligence and irresponsible attitudes of officials, who he says are only concerned with their own personal profits, for inadequate cotton and grain harvests.

Cotton output has failed to meet planned targets for four consecutive years in Jizzakh province and this year's grain harvest is barely half of the planned target of 500,000 tons.

Our correspondent in Tashkent reports that at a recent session of the Jizzakh provincial council, deputies fired provincial governor Alisher Tashkentboyef, replacing him with an official from Tashkent, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The council for Sir-Darya province is also expected to fire its governor.
