Romania/Moldova: Voters Cast Presidential Ballots Sunday

Bucharest, 15 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Romania's President Ion Iliescu and opposition candidate Emil Constantinescu have discussed a wide range of political and social issues in the last in a series of four broadcast debates.

Last night's debate concluded just before the official end of the campaign. The run-off is Sunday. Our Bucharest correspondent reports Iliescu continued a strong nationalistic theme, while Constantinescu again questioned Iliescu's social policies and cited corruption scandals during Iliescu's term.

On the strength of endorsements by virtually all opposition parties, Constantinescu was narrowly leading the most recent public opinion surveys ahead of Sunday's run-off.

Moldova holds presidential elections Sunday as well. Incumbent President Mircea Snegur faces challengers Parliament Chairman Piotr Luchinski and Prime Minister Andrei Sangeli. While polls have shown Snegur with a significant margin of support over his opponents, a victory in the first round is not projected.
