Kyrgyzstan: Opposition Leader's Sentence Reconsidered

Bishkek, 31 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - The lawyer for jailed opposition leader Topchubek Turgunaliev, Yuri Maksimov, tells our correspondent in Bishkek that the board of the Kyrgyz Supreme Court is due today to reconsider Turgunaliev's case.

TurgunAliyev was sentenced to 10 years in prison earlier this year by the municipal court in Bishkek after being found guilty of embezzlement, abuse of power and forgery. The Supreme Court changed the verdict in February and cut Turgunaliev's sentence to four years.

The procurator general's office has appealed to the board of the Supreme Court in an effort to restore the original sentence.
