Kazakhstan: Energy Prices To Double

Almaty, 1 April 1997 (RFE/RL) -- The power company serving the region of the Kazakh capital, Almaty, has announced that energy costs for the area will double beginning today.

Our correspondents in Kazakhstan say the increase will bring the average monthly costs of an apartment dweller to between 6,000 and 7,000 tenge, which is also the average monthly wage in Kazakhstan.

Pensioners in Kazakhstan receive 2,500 to 3,000 tenge per month. Today's announcement follows demonstrations in March over poor living conditions.
