Kabul, 23 April 1997 (RFE/RL) - The Red Cross says it has increased aid to the estimated 250,000 people displaced by the war in Afghanistan between the Islamic Taliban and opposing forces. A Red Cross official today told reporters in Kabul that the Red Cross has distributed over 175 tons of food to about 17,000 internally displaced people in the past week.
Most of the people were forced to move as a result of fighting north of the capital Kabul and in the northwestern provinces of Afghanistan. Many refugees have also fled across Afghanistan's border into neighboring Turkmenistan.
