Nagorno-Karabakh: Negotiators Due To Arrive In Armenia

Prague, 13 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - A joint U.S.-Russian-French team is due to arrive in Armenia today to continue diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The team is also expected to visit government leaders in Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh this weekend to discuss reactions to new proposals aimed at re-starting peace negotiations. The proposals were presented to the three sides last month.

Fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh broke out after the mainly Armenian populated enclave in Azerbaijan declared independence in 1988. A ceasefire took effect in 1994, but there has been little progress toward a final settlement.
