Moscow, 20 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Russian President Boris Yeltsin today called on young people in his country to study to become the new professionals who will lead Russia into the next century.
In a radio address, Yeltsin said Russia had never had such a young elite and that recruitment to the team of leaders into the next century had already begun. Yeltsin called on young people to study hard - abroad if necessary - to become those new leaders.
Yeltsin also praised Russia as "one of most promising" countries in the world for young and intelligent people. He said the country is developing rapidly and needs young professionals.
The radio address was recorded yesterday before Yeltsin left for the summit of major industrialized nations in the US city of Denver. The summit is due to open later today.
