Brussels, 31 May 1999 (RFE/RL) - NATO says its warplanes struck an army barracks in Surdulica in southern Serbia, but did not confirm Serbian reports that a stray bomb had struck a sanatorium in the town. A NATO military spokesman said in Brussels today that NATO is "looking into these reports."
Serbian media reported that at least 11 people had been killed at the sanatorium. The report could not be independently confirmed.
Yesterday, NATO said it had bombed a bridge in Varvarin, some 150 km south of Belgrade. Yugoslav media claimed that another 11 people died in that attack. NATO says the bridge was a legitimate target and reiterated that there is never any intention to target civilians.
Meanwhile, EU foreign ministers are due to meet in Brussels today to plot strategy for ending the Kosovo crisis.
