Iraq: Turkey Calls On U.S. To Secure Order In North

Ankara, 25 August 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Turkey's Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said the United States should do its utmost to secure order in northern Iraq in the aftermath of clashes between the Kurdish and Turkoman communities. Gul said today in Ankara at a meeting with representatives of the Turkomans that Turkey cannot "accept the recent treatment" of the Turkomans in Iraq.

On 22 August, five Turkomans and three Kurds were killed in clashes in the northern town of Tuz Khurmatu. The incidents sparked protests in the city of Kirkuk, where three Turkomans were killed.

Deploring the situation, Gul called for efforts to prevent a repeat of clashes.
