President Of Gazprom Visits Tatarstan
Gazprom President Rem Vyakhirev met with President Shaimiev in Kazan on 29 December to discuss the resolution of the remaining debt of Tatarstan's enterprises to Gazprom. Kazan media reports that Tatarstan's government has been successful in making the regular monthly payments to Gazprom and now is seeking ways to pay the total debt of 970 million rubles for gas consumed by its enterprises. President Mintimer Shaimiev said that in 1999 Tatarstan Republic needed to have more gas.

Plan To Remove Substandard Housing Successful
Republic television reports that Kazan city administration has carried out its plans to eliminate ramshackle housing during 1998. Some 4032 families in Kazan have been moved into new apartments. That brings to more than 10,000 the number of families that have received new flats within the last three years. On 29 December President Shaimiev and Kazan Mayor Kamil Iskhakov vitied the new neighborhoods.

Impure Water Problem Remains
Kazan residents will continue to face the problem of impure drinking water, according to the specialists reporting to the republican commission of parliamentary control. A recently purchased purification system is not operational because there is no money to buy the expensive purifying agent the system requires.
