A U.S. Senate committee has delayed a confirmation vote on President Barack Obama's nominee for defense secretary.

The Senate Armed Services Committee was due to vote this week on Chuck Hagel's nomination, but 25 Republican senators blocked the vote and asked Hagel to provide more personal financial details.

The lawmakers want Hagel to explain who financed his private speeches and whether he has any ties to foreign funders.

Hagel has promised to resign from any organization that poses a conflict of interest.

Committee Chairman Carl Levin (Democrat-Michigan) said he hoped to reschedule the vote "as soon as possible."

Hagel's nomination is opposed by some conservative groups and many Republican lawmakers.
