On Victory Day, A Belarusian Former POW Remembers 1945 Liberation
In January 1944, 12-year-old Regina Laurynovich was imprisoned by Nazi troops in occupied Soviet Belarus. Along with hundreds of thousands of other Belarusians, she was sent to work in a forced labor camp in Germany, where she spent more than a year. In April 1945, U.S. troops liberated the camp near Stuttgart, freeing Laurynovich and her fellow prisoners of war. RFE/RL’s Belarus Service spoke to Laurynovich about her memories of the war ahead of Victory Day, marked on May 9 in the former Soviet states.
