Belarusians on May 14 celebrated Radunitsa, a religious festival translated as the Day of Rejoicing, which falls nine days after Orthodox Easter. Believers traditionally visit the graves of relatives, where they pray, eat, drink, and leave a gift of colored eggs. In the village of New Gramyki, which lies inside the zone affected by the 1986 Chornobyl nuclear disaster, residents who were forced to evacuate their homes observed the holiday by returning to visit to a cemetery within the so-called Dead Zone.
