On December 7, 1988, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck northern Armenia. The quake killed thousands across the region. RFE/RL's Armenian Service chief Harry Tamrazian traveled to the city of Gyumri and found many residents struggling with poverty, poor housing, and a lack of hope for a better future.
