The city of Slovyansk has been a focal point of the conflict ravaging eastern Ukraine for months, with government forces battling pro-Russian separatists. Many residents have remained, but some have fled despite a cease-fire that was declared in the region by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called on Russia to support his peace plan "with deeds, not words."
Speaking at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg on June 26, Poroshenko said that, despite voicing support for the plan, Moscow was still not doing enough.
More positive thinking in Russian official circles:
