A Malaysian passenger plane has crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border.
A Ukrainian Interior Ministry adviser, Anton Herashchenko, claimed the plane had been shot down by a ground-to-air missile.
Herashchenko said he believed all 280 passengers and 15 crew were killed.
He said the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters when it was hit by a missile. It came down near the town of Shakhtarsk in eastern Donetsk region.
Media reports said the plane, a Boeing 777, was on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysia Airlines said on Twitter it had lost contact with the plane over Ukrainian air space.
Ukraine's government forces are currently battling pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk region.

Both Interfax and ITAR-TASS, citing aviation industry sources, said the plane was a Boeing 777 on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
The reports -- which have not been confirmed -- said the plane had 280 passengers and 15 crew on board.
They said the plane reportedly crashed in Ukrainian territory some 60 kilometers from the Russian border on July 17.
Interfax also cited a Ukrainian law enforcement source as saying the plane crashed near the town of Shakhtarsk in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.
