Azerbaijani Family Disappears After Protesting Police Actions

BAKU -- Officials in the Azerbaijani exclave on Naxcivan refuse to provide information on the whereabouts of the wife and son of Ismayil Huseynov, who was confined to a psychiatric clinic after protesting police actions against his son, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

Huseynov's wife, Khanimzar, and son Elvin, were last seen on January 9 in front of the clinic hoping to see Ismayil, who is 72 years old.

The Huseynovs, of Naxcivan's Sadarak district, demonstrated along with other families accusing the police of violence against their sons.

Hospital officials have said Ismayil Huseynov is no longer in the psychiatric clinic, but his whereabouts are not known.

The parents of Afiq Valiyev, Ibrahim and Turkan, are also missing after reportedly being taken to the police department on January 13. The Valiyevs had also protested against police treatment of their son.
