Azeri Now Being Taught In Kyrgyzstan


KANT, Kyrgyzstan -- A secondary school in the Kyrgyz city of Kant has begun teaching students the Azeri language in a first for the post-Soviet republic, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Arif Agayev and official representatives of Kyrgyzstan's Foreign Ministry attended a ceremony at Kant's Secondary School No. 4 when the classes began on September 14.

Azerbaijani Embassy sources told RFE/RL that more than 20,000 ethnic Azeris live in Kyrgyzstan.

The Azeri-language classes are also planned for schools in the town of Sokuluk in the near future.
