The Belarusian youth organization Malady Front (Youth Front) is staging a one-day protest fast today, international Human Rights Day, to commemorate the victims of Soviet-era communism.

Malady Front leader Zmitser Dashkevich told RFE/RL's Belarus Service that the action is also being held to express "solidarity with the Belarusian youth [who have been] oppressed by the current regime."

With this action, the leaders and activists of Malady Front are finishing the first stage of a campaign called "Communism in the Dock" (Communism on Trial).

Soviet dissidents and political prisoners used to hold a one-day protest fast every December 10 to demand a general amnesty for all political prisoners in the USSR.
