BISHKEK -- A national census has begun in Kyrgyzstan, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Kyrgyz National Statistics Committee head Orozmat Abdykalykov told RFE/RL that the census began at midnight at national airports, bus stations, and railway stations.
Abdykalykov said that more than 16,000 officers who passed through a United Nations training program are involved in the census work.
The census is scheduled to last until April 2 and its major goal is to get a clear picture of the country's demographic and housing situation.
The last census was held in Kyrgyzstan about 10 years ago.
