Dozens Dead As Bus Falls Into River In Indian Kashmir

More than 25 people have been killed when their overcrowded passenger bus slid off a mountain road in Indian-ruled Kashmir and plummeted down a deep gorge, authorities said.

At least three people "managed to wriggle out of the mangled vehicle and swim to safety," Reuters quoted an eyewitness as saying.

The accident, late on July 23, happened in the Kishtwar district of the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Rescue efforts were complicated by the rocky terrain and a lack of information as to the number of people on the bus.

Buses in the area are frequently overcrowded, with deadly accidents on the winding mountain roads a common occurrence.
