ASTANA -- The chief of the Investigations Department of the Kazakh National Security Committee, Abylaikhan Gabbasov, has told journalists that the former head of Kazakhstan's uranium-producing company was arrested with the approval of the Akmola Military Court, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Mukhtar Dzhakishev and his several fellow executives were arrested on May 21.

Dzhakishev is officially charged with financial mismanagement, fraud, and embezzlement.

Gabbasov also said it is up to the court to rule on whether Dhakishev's trial should be open or closed.

He added that allegations that Dzhakishev and his former deputies are being tortured are baseless.

Dzhakishev and his relatives say that all the accusations are politically motivated.
