Koranic Verses To Appear On Chechen Roads

Traffic police plan to install boards with verses from the Koran in Chechen and Russian on major roads in Chechnya, a spokesperson for the State Inspection for Road Traffic Safety has told RFE/RL's North Caucasus Service.

Passages from the holy book will instill discipline in drivers and remind them of the fleeting nature of life, Chechnya's traffic-police chiefs believe.

Road accidents have reached epidemic proportions in Chechnya.

It is not clear, however, whether the remedy proposed by the police will have an effect on Chechnya's President Ramzan Kadyrov who regularly defies speed limits (see video here) and apparently enjoys immunity from prosecution.
