NARYN, Kyrgyzstan -- Kyrgyz Ombudsman Tursunbek Akun has won a libel case against a former colleague, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

A court in the central Kyrgyz city of Naryn ruled that Akun was libeled by Zuura Umetalieva, his former representative in the Naryn region.

Akun filed the lawsuit against Umetalieva for stating in June that Akun had used state money for his personal use.

The court today said Umetalieva's statements were unfounded and fined her 5,000 soms ($106).

The court also ordered the Akipress and 24.kg news agencies, which reported Umetalieva's statement in June, to refute the reports.

Akun told RFE/RL that he would not accept the fine from his former colleague, who has since retired.
