No Agreement On New Iraqi Electoral Law

BAGHDAD -- Iraq's legislative drafting committee has failed to reach agreement on the new electoral law, RFE/RL’s Radio Free Iraq (RFI) reports.

Deputy Parliament Speaker Sheikh Khalid al-Attia said that "the major issue was whether to allocate all seats in the parliament by a system of proportional representation, keeping Iraq as a single electoral constituency, or adopt open-slate election by districts."

Attia added that now the issue will now go back to parliament for discussion. He said that the majority of MPs are in favor of an open list system, which was partially adopted in the last provincial elections.

Attia underlined that all factions agree that provisions on the number of seats held by women and minority should be included in the new electoral law.
