MOSCOW -- Russia's Industry and Trade Ministry has distributed nearly 200,000 vouchers in an effort to encourage drivers to trade in their old cars for new models, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The nationwide plan calls for owners of vehicles 10-years or older to leave their cars at various recycling centers and receive a government voucher for 50,000 rubles ($1,617).

The voucher can only be used toward the purchase of a new car.

The only stipulation is that the new car -- whether a foreign or domestic brand -- must have been assembled in Russia.

The average monthly salary in Russia last year was 23,505 rubles ($760).
