KHIMKI, Russia -- A Russian environmental activist is in hospital in serious condition after being beaten in the town of Khimki near Moscow, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Konstantin Fetisov was severely beaten on November 4 by unknown assailants near his apartment while returning home from the police station.

The leader of the Khimki Forest Defenders movement, Yevgeniya Chirikova, told RFE/RL that Fetisov underwent an operation on November 4.

Police had summoned him to the station to deliver a subpoena to him. Fetisov was officially charged with organizing an unsanctioned mass gathering.

Earlier this week, Fetisov protested at a rally against the expansion of a dumping site on the bank of the Moscow River. He was temporarily detained by the police.
