MOSCOW (Reuters) -- Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev has sacked the leader of the restive southern Russian region of Ingushetia, Murat Zyazikov, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Violence has been increasing between security forces and rebels in Ingushetia this year. Some political analysts have said the region, which borders Chechnya, is on the brink of civil war.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
