Sochi Environmentalists Charged For Obstructing Olympics Work

SOCHI -- Two Russian activists will stand trial for obstructing construction projects and resisting police orders in the Sochi district of Adler, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Activists Andrei Rudomakha and Suren Gazarian managed on August 20 to halt construction of an infrastructure project in Adler -- the southernmost district of Sochi -- for the 2014 Winter Olympics by blocking workers' access to the construction spot.

The workers had to call police before they could continue their work.

The two activists say that the destruction of a forest necessary for the construction of a new highway, railway, and several hotels for the Winter Olympics is illegal.

They say that along with the pristine forest, several plant types considered to be rare species are being destroyed by the construction.
